  1. In general, any system of belief; in the
  2. Christian church the verbal confessions of
  3. faith expressing the accepted doctrines of
  4. the church. The different forms are the
  5. Apostles' Creed, the Nicene Creed, and the
  6. Athanasian Creed. The only creed recognized
  7. by the Orthodox Church is the Nicene. The
  8. oldest is the Apostles' Creed, which, though
  9. not the work of the apostles, was probably
  10. first formulated in the 2nd century. The full
  11. version of the Apostles' Creed, as now used,
  12. first appeared about 750. The use of creeds
  13. as a mode of combating heresy was established
  14. by the appearance of the Nicene Creed,
  15. introduced by the Council of Nicaea in 325
  16. when Arianism was widespread, and giving the
  17. orthodox doctrine of the Trinity. The Nicene
  18. Creed used today is substantially the same as
  19. the version adopted at the church council in
  20. Constantinople in 381, with a filioque clause
  21. added during the 5th and 8th centuries in the
  22. Western church. The Athanasian Creed is
  23. thought to be later in origin than the time
  24. of Athanasius (died 373), although it
  25. represents his views in a detailed exposition
  26. of the doctrines of the Trinity and the
  27. incarnation. Some authorities suppose it to
  28. have been composed in the 8th or 9th century
  29. but others place it as early as the 4th or
  30. 5th century.
